The community of Obogu in the Asante-Akim South Municipality is reeling from grief following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of 17 young members of the town.
The devastating incident occurred on the outskirts of Juaso on Monday, cutting short the lives of the victims, who were returning from a church programme. The magnitude of the loss has plunged the entire town into mourning.
When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited Obogu on Tuesday, the pain was palpable. Gyidim, a suburb predominantly occupied by members of the Saviour Church, had fallen eerily silent. Streets once filled with laughter and daily activity were now deserted, overtaken by the sounds of weeping and sorrow.
Clusters of mourners clad in red and black, the colours of mourning, gathered at the community’s entrance. The heartbreak was written on their faces. Women sat on the ground in anguish, some with bowed heads, others wandering through the community, lost in despair. Men stood motionless, visibly shaken, wiping away tears as they struggled to process the shock.
In front of the homes of the deceased, mourning canopies had been erected as families and sympathisers gathered in solemn unity to console one another.
The tragedy has left a deep scar on a town known for its communal faith and strong spiritual ties. Now, that faith is being tested like never before, as residents cling to it for strength and comfort.
Although the grief will not pass quickly, the community remains united in remembrance. The 17 young lives lost will continue to live in the prayers, stories, and hearts of those who knew and loved them.
