Some residents of Sunyani Zongo in the Bono Region resisted what they termed a forceful eviction by the Assembly Member for the Zongo electoral area on Friday.
The residents, suspected to be weed smokers, clashed with the assembly member and his team, chasing them away with offensive weapons and foiling the eviction process.
According to the irate residents who spoke with Kaakyire Kwasi Afari of Ark News at the scene said the assembly had instructed them to vacate the land purportedly for recreational development.
However, despite partial clearance of the land, the Sunyani East Municipal assembly has failed to initiate the proposed project, leading residents to believe the area will remain abandoned.
Residents questioned the eviction, citing their long-term occupation of the area and lack of alternative housing.
The disputed area is known as the “weed base” or “Ghetho” for weed smokers who are mostly residents in the area. Some alleged that the assembly member’s eviction attempt was motivated by their weed smoking.
The residents also raised concerns about the assembly member’s authority to evict them, highlighting the need for police assistance and prior notification.
Additionally, some lamented the lack of job opportunities despite promises of employment.
They vowed to resist any foul attempt that intends to carry out the eviction.
